Altispinax (meaning "with high spines") is a dubious genus of large predatory theropod dinosaur from the early Cretaceous, in what is now Germany.

Altispinax is known only from a single tooth; though multiple fragmentary pieces show it to have a sail. Traditionally belived to be a Spinosaurid or Megalosaurid, it's now thought to be similar to Acrocanthosaurus. However, little is known about Altispinax as the only reliable fossil is the original tooth.

Novel[]

Carnosaur[]

Like all dinosaurs in the novel, Altispinax was recreated by Lord Darren Penward when he found dinosaur DNA fragments inside fossils and used them as a basis for restructuring the DNA of chickens.

There is almost no physical information about this dinosaur. After it´s escape, it killed a local farmer and his cattle, before being gunned down by an army helicopter.

Trivia[]

  • In the novel, Altispinax is described as a quadrupedal dinosaur. In realty, the creature was a bipedal like all theropods in the novel. It's possible that the author might have mistaken Altispinax for the pelycosaur Dimetrodon.
